Join passionate blues guitar enthusiast Javier Matos on a musical adventure - driving the blues highway!
In this terrific lesson Javier takes a deep dive into the key of A. He explores stylistic changes as the blues migrated from its birthplace in the Mississippi Delta to the Upper Mid-West, Louisiana, Texas and California. On this informative and fun road trip, Javier teaches the secrets of six archetypal artists, offering encouragement and insight into how to build your own sound by studying these masters.
Starting with Robert Johnson’s influential sound from the Delta, Javier teaches bends, turnarounds, chord positions, and other signature phrases of this style, including the always-present thumb groove.
Next stop on the blues highway is a visit to Louisiana and East Texas, exploring the style of Frankie Lee Sims. Sims’ infectious rhythm and simple fills make this an especially fun stop on this journey. A highlight of this segment is a cool triplet fill that will really get your motor running.
Staying in Texas, you will learn about “Lil’ Son” Jackson’s sound. He took a rudimentary approach to the blues which is similar to Mance Lipscomb’s, with a gritty single-note call-and-response approach and a thumping thumb for rhythm.
From there you will arrive in the Windy City where you’ll find the sound of “Magic” Sam. This Chicago style really jumps with fills and a driving groove. There are consistent correlations between the earlier rustic styles, but “Magic" Sam adds his own element of big-city grit.
Next you will take a jaunt to the Motor City and check out “Baby Boy” Warren. This obscure artist is a great example of the sound that came out of Detroit. A highlight of this segment is a really cool intro and ending turnaround that will expand your bag of blues tricks.
California is the last stop on the highway. You’ll take a look at R. Green’s style, which infuses a mix of single-note runs into a steady bass thump.
Then, Javier ties it all together with a composition of his own called “Green With an E” , brilliantly pulling many of these styles into a cohesive piece.
Throughout this unique lesson, Javier’s fine teaching skills are on full display. As he takes you from the deep South, up North and finally all the way out West, he consistently motivates you to find your unique voice as you learn to make your own arrangements of blues in A. Tap into the power of these great musical artists and enjoy the ride!

Another recently discovered gem from the Clearwater Festival, (later named the Hudson River Revival). It was recorded at the Kingson, NY waterfront. Artie and I were in our dual-flatpicking mode and obviously having fun playing this great song. Pete and Toshi Seeger were the instigators of this long-running consciousness-raising environmental effort to clean up the Hudson River.

Thank you for sharing your talents and thoughts and blessed gift from our Lord God. I have been using your Technique books, sheet music and DVD. I have been playing classical guitar and strumming Christian contemporary. But now I have been learning how to play flatpicking bluegrass from your materials. I also been using the tortex standard .73mm picks. After trying many styles and thicknesses I have settled for this one pick for everything. Christ Jesus our Lord and Savior, John

Pete passed away some years ago. I am old enough to remember the movement to stop the war in Vietnam as well as the toll it took. I turned 18 shortly after the draft ended. I still had to go sign up for it though. I had several friends and family members who went none of whom were even the same after returning. Pete, I wish you were still here with us today with all your friends. You really made a difference. R.I.P

Maybe you should look at the banjeurines that were made at the end of the 1880s through around 1910. These were five string banjos with a larger rim and shorter neck. S. S. Stewart made many of them and you can find them on the internet. At that time “classic” playing that included waltzes, marches and ragtime was all done on five string instruments with gut strings and a typical ensemble included the regular banjo, piccolo banjo, banjeurine and even bass banjo alone with guitars and mandolins. The early evolution of the tenor banjo comes from removing the fifth peg from a banjeurine and tuning in fifths so that violin and cello players could easily adapt to play for dance bands. I don’t think you’ve heard much tenor banjo playing if you think it’s limited and not as energetic as five string playing. Google tenor banjo playing. 😄

This song may have been written down in the modern era but trust me, melodies and harmonies like these go way back to the highlands of Scotland in the 17th century. They have a plaintive quality that few musical traditions have ever matched. This tune may be new to you but it's not to me.

Happy, I listened hundreds of times to your album with Artie in 1971, and performed a number of the songs with my band Foxes out of Atlanta. Particularly memorable was the performance we did in 1971 at Vanderbilt in Nashville when we played “Rabbit Run” when we opened for Earl Scruggs and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Thanks for all the music!

I didn't start out wanting to play Banjo Scruggs style or Bluegrass style. From the very start my goal was to play like Pete Seeger. I can play the other styles now years later but playing Banjo like Pete Seeger is still where my heart is at! He made playing so enjoyable. He was a community minded player. By that I mean he wanted you to join in with him, even if all you knew how to do was hum. Humming is essential he'd say. He's still my inspiration and has my heart!
